THINK
IN PICTURES
Art Exhibit Sponsored by KENKOU, INC.
St. Mary’s Hall Theatre and Gallery*
May 21, 2008 (Wednesday) 7:00 - 9:00 PM
San Antonio, TX – May, 2008 - Kenkou, Inc.
presents the premier exhibit of charcoal and oil pastels, and foil
sculptures by nationally acclaimed folk artist Greg Pelner, entitled “Think
in Pictures.” Greg’s art is clear and
visually uncomplicated, expressive of a fresh and clean vision of
the world. His work is vibrant in color, simply executed, and
playfully meaningful. The works exhibited at St. Mary’s
Hall Theatre Gallery will be available for purchase.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Greg is well known for his nudes, considered
an unusual subject for folk artists, which display the human body moving
with both grace and humor. Drawn buildings are constructed
with total spotlight on their texture and color, almost void of landscape
placement. He creates a menagerie of animal sculptures and
drawings. Two of his favorite subjects are Noah’s Ark
and his own cats.
Greg has been prominent in the Folk Art community
since 1994. A
self-taught individual, he is uniquely expressive in media as diverse
as foil, stone, clay sculpture, oil pastel and acrylic paint. He
has been a frequent participant in the annual New York Folk Art Exhibit
and sale since 1996. His pastel art work was chosen as
the signature piece for the Visionary Art Museum’s 1996 exhibit, “Wind
in her Hair” in Baltimore, Maryland. Greg has been
featured in many publications including U.S. News and
World Report, November 4, 1996 and the Rosenaks’ Contemporary
Guide to American Folk Art (Abbeville Press,
1996). The International Folk Art Museum of Santa
Fe, New Mexico, has in their permanent collection a metal-cast foil
sculpture of an elephant Greg created. Although Greg resides
in Los Angeles, he is represented by galleries in Boston, MA; Washington,
D C; Hilton Head, SC; and Reading, PA. As demonstrated by his
exhibition record, “Outsider” Folk Art
has become a unique niche in the art world as it is now “INSIDE” museums
and collectors’ homes.
These would be outstanding accomplishments
for any individual; but Greg has had challenges since infancy. He is on the Autism
Spectrum and is also epileptic. He has a sight problem and
also survived cancer. Not only does he think in pictures, he
delivers that vision to the world.
INSPIRATIONAL
In addition to his exceptional artwork, Greg will share his narrative, “Success
in Spite of Differences.” When facing challenges,
to be overwhelmed by the problem is normal; but the Pelners, Greg
and his family, have concentrated on possibility more often than
difficulty.
This presentation will inspire art lovers and
families struggling to believe their child will find success in
the face of unique differences. Not
every child will reach such fame, but each person can find a productive
force to create meaning in their lives. When Greg was asked
what made life good for him, he said, “Well,
I have my work which is productive. And I have my mother to
care for.” Greg recognizes that feeling worthwhile and
having meaningful relationships creates a good life. We all
search for fulfillment.
Beyond the exhibit “Think in
Pictures”,
and telling the story “Success in Spite of Differences”,
Greg will be sketching for future works while in San Antonio. He
will also spend a day with the students at Randolph Air Force Base
Elementary School where he will assist young students to create their
own foil sculpture pieces.
